The Verona Area Wildcats Varsity scattered five hits on Wednesday, but weren’t able to push enough runs across, and lost 8-2 to Portage at Miller Park.

Ben Rortvedt reached base four times. He also drove in one runner. He tripled in the first inning.

Brad Laufenberg handled Portage’s lineup with ease, racking up four strikeouts. Laufenberg allowed no earned runs on five hits and no walks over four innings.

Hunter Lehman got the win for Portage. He allowed two runs over six innings. Lehman struck out two, walked five and gave up five hits.

Portage was sparked by Jake Kastenholz and Patrick Austin, who teamed up for three hits and four RBIs.

Tekoa Whitehead took the loss for the Verona Area Wildcats Varsity. He lasted just two innings, walked one, struck out none, and allowed four runs.

The top of the first saw the Verona Area Wildcats Varsity take an early lead, 1-0. The Verona Area Wildcats Varsity got a spark in the form of a Sam Favour single, before before Rortvedt tripled, bringing home Favour.

Portage never surrendered the lead after the first inning, scoring three runs on a three-run double by Kastenholz.

After pushing across one run in the top of the third, the Verona Area Wildcats Varsity faced just a 4-2 deficit. An RBI single by Keaton Knueppel gave the Verona Area Wildcats Varsity life. Lehman ended the inning by getting Tyler McClure to.

Portage built upon its lead with three runs in the sixth. A error scored Lehman for the inning’s first run. That was followed up by Austin’s single, plating TJ Belleau.
