Scoreboard operators were busy at Stampfl Field on Saturday as the Verona Area Wildcats Varsity and Kaukauna combined for 19 runs. Verona Area Wildcats Varsity eventually won the offensive battle 11-8 in seven innings.
The teams banged out 18 hits hits between them, as well as six for extra bases.
Keaton Knueppel racked up three RBIs on three hits for the Verona Area Wildcats Varsity. He singled in the first and second innings and doubled in the fourth inning.
Jake Toman got it done on the mound on the way to a win. He allowed four runs over five innings. He struck out two, walked one and surrendered six hits.
Andrew Handrich ended up on the wrong side of the pitching decision, charged with the loss. He allowed 11 runs in three innings, walked three and struck out two.
The Verona Area Wildcats Varsity went up for good in the first, scoring three runs on a groundout by Stephen Lund and an RBI single by Knueppel.
The Verona Area Wildcats Varsity scored four runs in the second inning, and then followed it up with four more in the fourth. In the second, the Verona Area Wildcats Varsity scored on a two-run single by Knueppel, bringing home Jason Frahm and David Rogowski.
Three Kaukauna runs crossed the plate in the top half of the third, making the score 7-3. An RBI single by Zach Shukoski, an RBI single by Dustin Landers, and gave Kaukauna life. The Kaukauna threat came to an end when Toman finally got Corey Hietpas to ground out.
One run in the top of the sixth helped Kaukauna close its deficit to 11-5. An RBI double by Louis Thompson fueled Kaukauna’s comeback. Shukoski to end the Kaukauna threat.
Three runs in the top of the seventh helped Kaukauna close its deficit to 11-8. A solo home run by Bryce Plate, an RBI double by Kasey Chambers, and an error set off Kaukauna rally. Lund ended the game by getting Coy Coffey to strike out.
