2016 Varsity Season
With the Wildcats’ regional victory over Monona Grove (11-2), they are off to sectionals in Beloit at Pohlman Field. There they will face Madison West, who upset Beloit Memorial 7-3 on Thursday.
Sectional games take place Tuesday, June 7, with West (#6) vs. Verona (#2) starting at 2 pm. The winner will face the victor of the Janesville crosstown rivalry game, Parker (#5) vs. Craig (#1), which starts at 11 am. The sectional championship game is played that same evening at 5 pm.
The Janesville game at 11 am and the sectional championship game at 5 pm will be broadcast live on Big AM 1380. Click on the “Listen Live” link in the upper right to stream their station.
Skip out of work early and come down to cheer on the ‘Cats late into the evening!
Monona Grove defeated Stoughton 3-1 on Tuesday evening. They face the Wildcats at Stampfl on Thursday at 5 pm for the Regional final. Sectional and State games are a good drive away this year (Beloit & Grand Chute), so this is a great game to kick off the ‘Cats playoff journey!
Come out Thursday and pack the “Chuck”!
Congratulations to seniors Keaton Knueppel (P) and Ben Rortvedt (C) and sophomore Stephen Lund (INF) whose seasons were recognized by being named to the 2016 Big Eight All Conference First Team. Senior Sam Favour (OF) and juniors Jeff Bishop (P) and Brad Laufenberg (P) were also awarded honorable mentions in the voting.
Rortvedt was also named 2016 All-Conference Player of the Year for his fantastic year at and behind the plate.

The Verona Area Wildcats Varsity lost a hotly contested 4-3 game in seven innings on Thursday at Mansfield Stadium after surrending the lead in the seventh inning.
Sam Favour racked up three RBIs on two hits for the Verona Area Wildcats Varsity. He singled in the fourth and sixth innings.
Keaton Knueppel handled Madison Memorial ‘s lineup with ease, racking up 12 strikeouts. Knueppel allowed one earned run, four hits and one walk over 6 2/3 innings.
Erik Goucher got the win for Madison Memorial . He tossed 1 1/3 innings of shutout ball. Goucher struck out three, walked two and gave up no hits.
Knueppel took the loss for the Verona Area Wildcats Varsity.
Neither team scored until the fourth when the Verona Area Wildcats Varsity got on the board. The Verona Area Wildcats Varsity scored on an RBI single by Favour.
Madison Memorial scored one run of its own in the fourth. Madison Memorial scored on an RBI double by Parker Burch.
Madison Memorial stayed on top until the final out after taking the lead in the seventh, scoring two runs on two errors.

Away Team: Verona – 5
Ben Rortvedt went 2-2 as the Verona Area Wildcats Varsity took home a 5-1 victory over Sun Prairie in seven innings at Summit Field on Tuesday.
He singled in the fourth inning and doubled in the sixth inning.
Jeff Bishop struck out seven, paving the way for a the Verona Area Wildcats Varsity win. Bishop allowed one earned run, nine hits and one walk over seven innings.
Marquis Reuter ended up on the wrong side of the pitching decision, charged with the loss. He lasted just two innings, walked five, struck out two, and allowed four runs.
The game’s last lead went to the Verona Area Wildcats Varsity thanks to a first inning rally that saw two runs cross the plate on an RBI single by Sam Favour.
In the first inning, Sun Prairie pushed across its only run of the day on a sacrifice fly by Jack Maastricht.

The Wildcats will battle Madison Memorial in their final regular season games Thursday. Pick a team and come out to cheer them on to a strong finish!
- Varsity has won their last five games and is 9-1 in their last ten. They will be away at Mansfield Stadium, just south of Memorial on the corner of Gammon and Mineral Point.
- JV is rallying hard from a mid-season slump, also winning their last five. They will be at Olson Field just north of Jefferson Middle School.
- The Freshmen are home on the Badger Ridge field. Come check out their power offense, which is averaging 8 runs per game this season. After going 5-5 in their last ten games, they are looking for a win to end their season with an even record.

Keaton Knueppel threw a shutout to lift the Verona Area Wildcats Varsity to a 6-0 win over La Follette at Stampfl Field in seven innings.
Knueppel got the win for the Verona Area Wildcats Varsity thanks to 16 strikeouts. The Verona Area Wildcats Varsity’s pitcher gave up just two hits over seven shutout innings.
The Verona Area Wildcats Varsity beat La Follette thanks to six hits, including three extra base hits.
Knueppel racked up three RBIs on one hit for the Verona Area Wildcats Varsity. He doubled in the fourth inning.
Peter Roloff ended up on the wrong side of the pitching decision, charged with the loss. He allowed six runs in four innings, walked three and struck out five.
The game’s last lead went to the Verona Area Wildcats Varsity thanks to a second inning rally that saw three runs cross the plate on a two-run double by Noah Anderson.

Away Team: East – 1
Ben Rortvedt went 2-4, helping the Verona Area Wildcats Varsity to a 4-1 victory over East on Tuesday at Stampfl Field.
He singled in the fifth inning and tripled in the sixth inning.
Jeff Bishop had an impressive outing against East’s lineup. East managed just one hit off of Bishop, who allowed no earned runs, walked one and struck out five during his three innings of work.
Cameron Cratic couldn’t get it done on the rubber for East, taking a loss. He lasted just 4 1/3 innings, walked one, struck out one, and allowed three runs.
In the bottom of the first, the Verona Area Wildcats Varsity grabbed the early lead, 1-0. The Verona Area Wildcats Varsity’s rally started when Keaton Knueppel singled.
The Verona Area Wildcats Varsity never trailed after scoring two runs in the fifth on two singles.

Verona has earned the second seed in Sectional #5 of the WIAA spring tournament, netting them a bye for the first round games on Tuesday, May 31. Stoughton and Monona Grove will battle for the chance to face the Wildcats at Stampfl on Thursday, June 2.
