Verona Area High School Wildcats BaseballThe Verona Area Wildcats Varsity surrender sixth inning lead to Sun Prairie (WI) in 7-6 defeat.

A tight game was decided in the sixth inning as the Verona Area Wildcats Varsity fell to Sun Prairie 7-6 in seven innings on Tuesday at Stampfl Field.

Walker Jenkins got the win for Sun Prairie . He allowed one run over 3 1/3 innings. Jenkins struck out four, walked one and gave up two hits.

Sun Prairie ‘s Jack Maastricht, Jenkins and Justus Benson combined for five hits and three RBIs.

Jeff Bishop couldn’t get it done on the rubber for the Verona Area Wildcats Varsity, taking a loss. He lasted just 1 2/3 innings, walked one, struck out two, and allowed two runs.

Sun Prairie jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Benson kicked things off for Sun Prairie with a single. A few plays later, Maastricht stole home.

The Verona Area Wildcats Varsity got one-run rallies in the third inning and the seventh. In the third, the Verona Area Wildcats Varsity scored on a walk by Jacob Slonim, plating RJ Woppert.

Sun Prairie pushed across two runs in both the fourth inning and the sixth. In the fourth, Sun Prairie scored on a two-run single by Benson, bringing home Jenkins and Maastricht.

It didn’t take long for the Verona Area Wildcats Varsity to respond as they scored four runs of their own in the fourth. The Verona Area Wildcats Varsity scored on a hit by pitch, a passed ball, an RBI single by Stephen Lund, and an error.

The game was never in doubt after the sixth, as Sun Prairie scored two runs on a two-run single by Ben Hauser.

After pushing across one run in the bottom of the seventh, the Verona Area Wildcats Varsity faced just a 7-6 deficit. An RBI single by Noah Anderson gave the Verona Area Wildcats Varsity life. Sun Prairie closed the game out when Jenkins got Woppert to strike out.
