The Verona Area Wildcats Varsity and Beloit Memorial lit up the scoreboard on Thursday as they combined for 17 runs. In the end, Verona Area Wildcats Varsity won the offensive battle 9-8 in seven innings.

The teams combined for 21 hits, including eight extra base hits.

The Verona Area Wildcats Varsity would not relinquish the lead as Beloit Memorial was unable to weather a nine-run fifth inning deficit.

Beloit Memorial scored on an error, an RBI double by Drew Freitag, an error, an RBI double by Trent Porter, and a two-run single by Cade Johnson in the fifth inning and a two-run home run by Johnson in the seventh inning. Despite its efforts, Beloit Memorial couldn’t get over the hump.

Stephen Lund put himself in scoring position with two extra-base hits for the Verona Area Wildcats Varsity. He doubled in the second and third innings and singled in the fifth inning.

Brad Laufenberg got the win for the Verona Area Wildcats Varsity. He tossed four innings of shutout ball. He struck out six, walked three and surrendered two hits.

The Verona Area Wildcats Varsity were sparked by Lund and Tyler McClure, who teamed up for five hits and five RBIs.

CJ Grahn couldn’t get it done on the hill for Beloit Memorial , taking a loss. He allowed nine runs in 4 1/3 innings, walked one and struck out six.

The game was never in doubt after the second, as the Verona Area Wildcats Varsity scored three runs on an RBI double by Noah Anderson and two singles.

The Verona Area Wildcats Varsity increased their lead with six runs in the fifth. Lund kicked things off with a single, plating Ben Rortvedt and Keaton Knueppel. That was followed up by McClure’s double, scoring Lund and Sam Favour.
