2018 Preseason Info

Welcome to the 2018 VASD Wildcat Baseball Season. Here are some important preseason details for this year.

Open gyms: The main high school gym is reserved every Saturday from 7–8 am for any prospective baseball players from January 13 through March 17 (except February 10 and 17). Take advantage of these opportunities to refresh your skills before tryouts.

Player meeting: An informational meeting for all players will be held right after school on Monday, March 5, in room D137. Even if you are not quite sure about playing Wildcat baseball this year, come to this meeting.

Parent meeting: Parents can meet coaches and learn about this season at an informational meeting on Wednesday, March 7, at 6:00 pm in the K-wing commons.

Pitcher & Catcher Workouts: WIAA now allows coaches to work with pitchers a week earlier than full-team practices. These will begin Tuesday, March 13 this year. Note that while catchers are allowed to be present at these practices to help receive, they can not be coached. More details will be shared at the player meeting about this change for 2018.

Tryouts & Practices: Tryouts for all players start Monday, March 19. Locations and times may depend on weather. Look for more information in the player and parent meetings. Rosters are typically announced by the end of the week.

Preseason Scrimmage: Varsity and JV will hold a preseason scrimmage against Edgewood on Wednesday, March 28.

First games:

Varsity & JV: Friday, March 30, away @ Milton

Freshman: Tuesday, April 4, away vs. Janesville Parker

The week of March 26 is VAHS spring break, but the program will still be holding practices. Note that the preseason scrimmage and first Varsity and JV games are during this week. Since this conflict is often a part of our season, the program developed the following statement:

The Verona Baseball Program has a great deal of respect for quality family time, including family vacations.  Per Verona Area School District policy there cannot be restrictions placed on players choosing to go on vacation with their own families during Spring Break.  However, in order for us to be successful we need all members of our teams present during practices and games and this includes Spring Break.  The practices and games during this week are crucial to a successful season, and the time lost during this week cannot be made up.  It is possible that players attending practices and games during Spring Break will be moved up the depth chart with their performances and bypass those that are not in attendance.  The Verona Baseball Program will be as successful as the dedication, commitment, and effort of its members.

Team schedules are available here under each team’s menu and on the Big 8 Conference site (select a baseball team in the “View Schedule” sidebar).
